STEP2's Garden
STEP2's Soroptimist of Reno Community Garden is growing organic veggies and herbs.  This garden is symbolic in many ways for the women and children that reside at the facility to rebuild their lives.  It demonstrates how we can plan and create success through consistency and follow through.  That even though they have not had an easy road in the past; they have the power to make decisions that have positive outcomes in the future.

We originally addressed a need for this project due to the fact that Nevada has a very transient environment that can lead to increases in drug use and gambling addiction.  We have programs in place that help the elderly, teens and children; along with scholarships and education, but we were not addressing those that were literally putting their lives back together.  Whether it was getting out of prison, rehab or a dangerous environment of abuse, we needed to help and inspire those that were at their lowest and darkest moments. STEP2 is the only facility and organization of its kind in the region and we wanted to provide another aspect of their growth and ability to rebuild lives. The community has looked at our Soroptimist club as a leader in initiating projects like this and many have jumped on board to assist the organization further along with our mission in helping women.  Currently about 35 families greatly benefit from the garden project that we created.  It has made a physical, emotional and symbolic impact on their path to rebuilding a brighter future for them and their children.
