About Soroptimist International of Reno

Since 1942, Soroptimist International Reno has been providing volunteer services and financial aid to the women and families of Northern Nevada. With a membership ranging over the years between 25-50 active members, Soroptimist International of Reno has made up in talent and dedication what we may have lacked in size.

In addition to providing educational scholarships to women in Reno on an annual basis, Soroptimist International of Reno members donate valuable time in volunteering for local organizations such at The Food Bank of Northern Nevada, the Salvation Army, STEP2, and Ally’s Prom Closet.

In 2002, Soroptimist International of Reno was recognized as the top non-profit organization in the State of Nevada and won the Governor’s Points of Light Award.

About Soroptimist International

Soroptimist International, a worldwide organization for professional women, is a global voice for women through awareness, advocacy, and action.  Through International Goodwill and Understanding, and Friendship, Soroptimists strive for: advancement of the status of women; high ethical standards; human rights for all; and equality, development and peace.

The name Soroptimist was coined from the Latin soror meaning sister, and optima meaning best. Soroptimist is perhaps best interpreted as 'the best for women'. From the founding of the first Soroptimist club in Oakland, California, in 1921, through to the present day where over 3000 clubs are flourishing throughout the world, Soroptimists have continued to strive to achieve 'the best for women' in every sphere of their lives.
